The alleged creator and operator of the Silk Road online marketplace has been wiped from his alma mater’s website. Prior to any opportunity to publicly defend himself, Ross Ulbricht has had his likeness and even trivial references to his name scrubbed from University of Texas at Dallas online documents.
The administration defends the actions by wanting to distance itself from any illegal activity, but how Ulbricht’s physics and nanotechnology research seven years ago could implicate UT Dallas seems shaky. The university’s newspaper editorial board blasted the decision.
His classmates and their accomplishments have been denied entirely through the deletion of whole pages in some cases, thousands of words gone because of a single reference to the renounced name. This wholesale obliteration is irresponsible and reactionary, and harms the reputation of innocent bystanders to this drama.
